Hellraiser: Revival Is Here, and Pinhead Has Weaponised Human Misery

Clive Barker's Hellraiser: Revival launches October 8, 2026, for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. You play Aidan, who enters the Labyrinth to rescue his girlfriend Sunny, apparently deciding that confronting extradimensional sadists is preferable to calling the authorities.
It's a first-person survival horror game with firearms, melee combat, puzzles and the Genesis Configuration, a supernatural box granting telekinesis, pyrokinesis and Hell Chains.
The powers aren't free, though. They run on Suffering.
And suddenly we're getting somewhere.
Before handing Pinhead your money, find out what happened when Hellraiser: Revival first opened its doors. Our demo breakdown investigates whether Saber actually understands Hellraiser, or merely bought Resident Evil a particularly disturbing leather outfit.
Hell has invented an economy based on human suffering
The Genesis Configuration is easily Revival's most interesting feature. Telekinesis lets you launch objects such as saw blades and rail spikes at enemies. Pyrokinesis absorbs and redirects fire, while the Hell Chains provide another spectacularly unpleasant method of dealing with people.
Using these powers consumes Suffering, a resource earned through executions.
Think about that for a moment.
You hurt enemies, collect their suffering and reinvest it into hurting more enemies. It's a self-sustaining economy built entirely around making people miserable.
The Cenobites have essentially invented capitalism, only with considerably less paperwork and a more honest description of the product.
I rather like the idea. Hellraiser has always treated pain as something almost sacred. Having players collect and spend it makes considerably more sense than giving Aidan a magic bar that regenerates whenever he hides behind a wardrobe.
It also creates an interesting relationship between conventional weapons and supernatural abilities. Guns remain useful, but the box offers additional possibilities, provided you've accumulated enough suffering to pay for them.
Whether that balance remains interesting throughout the game is another question.
Resident Evil has somehow ended up in a BDSM dungeon
Underneath the supernatural unpleasantness, Revival follows a familiar survival horror structure. You explore hostile environments, scavenge supplies, solve puzzles and fight enemies, occasionally discovering that running away is a perfectly respectable tactical decision.
The Genesis Configuration also manipulates parts of the Labyrinth and interacts with environmental puzzles. That gives the box a purpose beyond turning cultists into abstract sculpture.
There is something wonderfully ridiculous about transforming Hellraiser's famous puzzle box into a multifunctional tool. In the original films, opening one generally resulted in a lifetime of regret, followed by an eternity of considerably worse regret.
Now you can apparently use its powers to solve environmental problems.
Imagine explaining that to someone from the original film.
"Yes, it opens a gateway to unimaginable suffering, but have you tried using it on that inconvenient machinery?"
Still, making the box part of the gameplay is far better than having Pinhead occasionally appear to remind everyone which franchise they're playing.
We explored these questions in our Hellraiser: Revival demo coverage, including its Resident Evil similarities, atmosphere and combat.

If Pinhead's idea of entertainment sounds unnecessarily expensive, Buckshot Roulette offers a more economical alternative: a shotgun, a table and a man who apparently considers Russian roulette a perfectly respectable business model.
Pinhead is back, but the reviews are all over the place
Doug Bradley returns as Pinhead, which is excellent news. Some horror characters are so closely associated with one performance that replacing the actor feels like hiring someone else to play your father.
The early reviews, however, are wildly inconsistent.
Game Informer awarded Revival 4.5/10, reporting serious technical problems. Giant Bomb gave it 4/5, while Insider Gaming went considerably further with 9/10.
One person apparently visited Hell and had a wonderful time. Another emerged looking as though their computer had been personally tortured by Pinhead.
The atmosphere and Genesis Configuration have attracted praise, but combat and technical performance appear more divisive. That's enough uncertainty to make a launch-day recommendation difficult.
Should you play Hellraiser: Revival at launch?
The Genesis Configuration gives Revival something genuinely distinctive, and building its supernatural economy around suffering is a particularly fitting idea.
But the conflicting reviews, especially the technical complaints, make waiting for a clearer picture sensible before spending money.
Hellraiser: Revival has the ingredients for something special. Now we need to see whether the complete experience holds together.
Because being tortured by the Cenobites is one thing. Paying full price to be tortured by technical problems is quite another.
