DBD Halloween Hook Challenge 0/20: The Entity Can't Count

Dead by Daylight's Haunted by Daylight 2026 “Hook 20 Survivors” challenge is failing to track progress for some players. Multiple reports from October 13-14 describe the counter remaining stuck at 0/20 despite successfully hooking Survivors. Some players even see progress notifications during a Trial, only for everything to disappear when the match ends.

There's currently no verified workaround or confirmed explanation. If your counter refuses to move, I'd stop deliberately grinding this objective until something changes. You can keep playing Killer, obviously, but there's little point spending another evening sacrificing people to a system that apparently suffers from short-term memory loss. Somewhere in the Entity's accounting department, somebody is getting paid to stare at an empty spreadsheet.

Apparently, Dead by Daylight is breaking more than its own mathematics. Killer attack sounds are disappearing too, because being stabbed apparently no longer requires sound effects. Find out what's broken and whether you can fix it.

Apparently, hooking Survivors doesn't count as hooking Survivors

The challenge itself is straightforward. Hook 20 Survivors during Haunted by Daylight 2026. Considering that hanging people from enormous rusty meat hooks is practically the Killer's job description, this should be one of the less complicated things the event asks you to do.

Unfortunately, multiple players are reporting that their progress simply isn't being recorded. One describes playing matches with four and three kills respectively, yet the counter remains at 0/20. Similar complaints have appeared from other players, including on PlayStation 5.

The strangest reports involve the game acknowledging progress during a Trial before completely forgetting about it afterward. Which is rather interesting. Dead by Daylight can track interactions, calculate scores, distribute Bloodpoints and remember which poor bastard escaped through the hatch. Yet apparently remembering that someone spent thirty seconds hanging from a hook requires technology that hasn't been invented.

There are two slightly different symptoms here. Some players report no progress whatsoever, while others describe progress appearing during a match before disappearing afterward. They might share the same cause, but we don't know that.

Dead by Daylight has finally taught Survivors how to communicate. Update 10.2.0 introduces actual teamwork tools, presumably after years of watching four strangers negotiate life-threatening situations through interpretive crouching. See what changed.

Is the challenge trying to count 20 hooks in one match?

Some players suspect the challenge records hooks during individual Trials but fails to preserve progress between matches. Others wonder whether it's accidentally treating the entire objective as something that must be completed within a single Trial. Neither theory has been confirmed by Behaviour Interactive.

But suppose the second explanation is correct. A normal Dead by Daylight Trial contains four Survivors. Each Survivor can be hooked a maximum of three times before being sacrificed, meaning 12 hook events is the theoretical maximum in one normal match.

The objective requires twenty.

So if the counter genuinely resets after every Trial, completing the challenge would be mathematically impossible under the usual rules. You could play the greatest Killer match in human history, hook absolutely everybody three times, and still finish eight hooks short.

You'd need three additional Survivors just to make twenty possible. Perhaps Behaviour could arrange for them to arrive halfway through the match. A helicopter lands beside the generators, three confused people climb out, and the Entity welcomes them with a complimentary toolbox and an apology from Human Resources.

"Unfortunately, our progression department has made an administrative error, and we require additional personnel for immediate slaughter."

Of course, this is still only a theory. The actual problem could involve progress saving, quest validation or something else entirely. The disappearing notifications make the reset explanation worth investigating, but they don't prove it.

What should you do if your Halloween hook counter is stuck?

For now, I'd avoid specifically farming the challenge. There's no reason to keep repeating something that might not save your progress, especially when the Halloween event has other activities worth your time.

Check your counter after a normal Killer match. If you've hooked Survivors and it still reads 0/20, you're encountering the reported symptom. Don't waste hours switching Killers, perks or playlists expecting a miracle, because none of those changes has been reliably shown to fix the issue.

Instead, concentrate on other available event objectives and report the problem through Behaviour's official bug-reporting platform. Include your platform, what happened during the match and whether progress briefly appeared before disappearing. Screenshots or recordings could help document the issue.

One particularly annoying detail is that the twenty-hook objective appears at the beginning of a multi-stage event quest. If it refuses to complete, affected players may be unable to advance through that progression chain. So this goes beyond a few missing numbers. Halloween rewards have deadlines, and nobody wants to discover they're inaccessible because the game has decided murder requires a signed receipt.

Has Behaviour confirmed a fix?

As of October 14, there's no verified fix date, confirmed cause or reliable workaround. The Haunted by Daylight 2026 event runs until November 3, leaving time for Behaviour to address the issue. Whether missing progress will be restored or affected players will need to complete the challenge again remains unknown.

Until then, I'd leave this particular objective alone if your counter is stuck. The Entity has spent years encouraging Killers to sacrifice Survivors. Now they're doing exactly that, and apparently someone has decided their work doesn't count.

Even supernatural murder has become an unpaid internship.

Dead by Daylight Halloween Hook Challenge FAQ

Why is my Halloween hook challenge stuck at 0/20?

Multiple players report that their hooks aren't being counted or that progress disappears after a match. The exact cause remains unconfirmed.

Do I need to hook 20 Survivors in one match?

No, the documented objective doesn't specify a single match. That would also be impossible under normal rules, since four Survivors can only be hooked 12 times in total.

Is there a workaround for the broken hook challenge?

No reliable workaround has been verified. Switching Killers, perks or playlists hasn't been confirmed to fix the issue.

Has Behaviour Interactive confirmed a fix?

As of October 14, 2026, there's no verified fix date or confirmed solution.

Should I keep attempting the challenge?

If your counter is stuck, I'd leave it alone for now and focus on other event objectives. There's little point providing the Entity with another twenty victims when its accounting department insists nobody has died.

I'm Niels Gys, founder and editor of CRIMENET GAZETTE. I write about crime, heist, villain, and horror games because somebody has to separate genuine criminal masterpieces from games that couldn't organize a successful mugging.

Outside the website, I'm the frontman of JETBLACK SMILE, a Belgian rock 'n' roll band that sounds like bad decisions played through loud guitars. Turns out writing about chaos, criminals, and morally questionable life choices isn't all that different from writing songs.

I started CRIMENET because too much gaming coverage feels afraid to have an opinion. Reviews become press releases, every game is "solid," and somehow everyone leaves happy except the reader.

Not here.

CRIMENET covers crime, heist, villain and horror games, with GTA Online as one of our main ongoing beats. Not the heroic kind. The kind where you rob banks, build empires, betray your crew, or become the monster everyone else is trying to survive.

I don't do review scores. The internet already has enough people arguing whether a game deserves a 72 instead of a 71, like they're negotiating a hostage release over a single percentage point. I'd rather tell you what the game actually feels like to play and whether it's worth your time.

Every article is built on research, evidence, and an unhealthy intolerance for mediocre game design.
