Dead by Daylight 10.2.0 Finally Lets Survivors Communicate Without Voice Chat

Dead by Daylight 10.2.0 finally gives Survivors a proper way to tell each other what they're doing during a Trial.
The new Survivor Intent System gives players eight predefined messages through a configurable radial menu. The chosen intent appears next to your HUD information, you can customise which messages you want available, mute individual players, turn the whole thing off, and bots can use the system too.
Which sounds suspiciously normal until you remember that Dead by Daylight has spent years putting four strangers in a life-or-death cooperative situation and then giving them roughly the communication tools available to medieval lighthouse keepers.
10.2.0 also changes when players can Abandon, Surrender or End Trial, mainly for matches full of bots or situations where everyone already knows how this particular murder is going to end.
That combination makes this a considerably bigger update than the usual ritual of moving perk percentages around until Reddit starts making diagrams.

If Dead by Daylight has reminded you that being hunted is fun but being the thing doing the hunting is better, descend into CRIMENET’s horror bunker. We keep the nightmares worth losing sleep over and quietly bury the expensive jump scares.
Solo queue has finally discovered language
Premade Survivor groups have always had an obvious advantage: they can talk.
"He's on me."
"I'm going for the save."
"Finish the gen."
"Why the fuck did you lead him here?"
Very advanced technology.
Solo Survivors meanwhile have largely been left to communicate through the HUD, pointing, crouching and staring at someone with sufficient intensity that perhaps they will understand you would quite like them to stop cleansing a Totem while Steve is being murdered twenty metres away.
The Survivor Intent System finally puts something between complete silence and opening Discord. There are eight predefined messages, chosen through a radial menu, and you decide which ones you actually want equipped. An anti-spam cooldown escalates if somebody starts hammering the system, because Behaviour has correctly anticipated that the moment humanity is given a button, somebody will press it seventeen times in six seconds. It obviously won't give solo players everything a coordinated voice group has. A radial menu cannot reproduce someone yelling increasingly detailed tactical information while also accusing Meg of being an idiot. Modern military communications systems cannot reproduce that.
But solo queue never needed a complete substitute for voice chat. It needed enough information to stop four people occasionally behaving like separate government departments that have accidentally been assigned the same emergency.
If someone can communicate what they're planning, somebody else can react to it.
That sounds incredibly basic because it is.
Which is why its absence has always been so strange.
Dead Trials can finally be taken behind the shed
The second big change is what happens when a Trial has basically collapsed.
10.2.0 substantially changes the conditions for Abandon, Surrender and End Trial.
A remaining human Survivor can abandon when everyone else has become bots under the appropriate conditions. Killers can also abandon when the remaining Survivors are bots. Survivors can surrender in situations where everybody is simultaneously downed, while Killers can end a Trial when the remaining Survivors are bots and already down.
Behaviour had to be careful here, because there are really two different problems hiding inside the same mechanic.
Problem one: sometimes the match is finished in every meaningful sense and the game simply hasn't accepted the paperwork yet.
Problem two: Dead by Daylight players experience adversity.
You cannot therefore place a giant SURRENDER button in the middle of the screen every time something goes badly, because somebody will attempt to capitulate the moment their favourite generator makes an unpleasant noise. The earlier versions of these systems included conditions Behaviour later removed because they could encourage people to give up early or deliberately push matches toward an exit condition.
So the live system is trying to recognise when continuing has become pointless without turning surrender into another strategy.
That actually makes sense. If three teammates have disappeared and you're now sharing the Trial with several bots, forcing everyone through the remaining ceremony achieves very little. The match hasn't become tense. It has become a meeting nobody can leave because Kevin booked the room until four.

Enough surviving. Become the problem. CRIMENET’s Villain hub is where killers, monsters, tyrants and other deeply unsuitable role models finally get the career guidance they deserve.
Then there are the perks
10.2.0 also contains a substantial perk pass, including changes made between the test build and live release.
Those matter, obviously. They will alter builds, counters and whatever the current sacred mathematical scripture says Survivors and Killers are allowed to equip without being publicly executed on Reddit.
But I don't think they're the interesting part of this update.
Perks change all the time.
Giving random Survivors an actual communication system changes something much more fundamental about solo play. The abandonment and surrender changes then tackle what happens once that social structure starts collapsing because people disconnect and bots take their places.
Those two systems also fit together rather neatly. At the beginning of the match, Behaviour is trying to help four strangers cooperate. At the horrible end of the match, it is trying to recognise when half of them have vanished and nobody wants to spend another six minutes pretending everything is fine. Basically Dead by Daylight has discovered both workplace communication and compassionate redundancy in the same patch.
There are already reports of crashes and loading freezes affecting some PC players, so 10.2.0 has not descended from heaven surrounded by angels performing the Terror Radius on trumpets. It is also far too early to know whether Survivor Intent will meaningfully improve solo queue once thousands of actual players have spent time abusing, ignoring and misunderstanding it.
Human beings remain part of the system. Behaviour can only patch so much.
Also, NieR is here
The update period also brings NieR:Automata cosmetics into Dead by Daylight.
Survivors get Legendary outfits based on 2B and A2, while The Legion gets an Emil-inspired outfit.
So we now have a game where Behaviour has spent considerable design effort solving communication problems in asymmetrical multiplayer while someone dressed as a giant skeletal moon chases an android around a pile of burning tyres.
Fine.
Completely normal videogame.
The important bit is that 10.2.0 changes how Survivors communicate and gives obviously dead Trials a cleaner way to actually die.
For solo players especially, that's far more interesting than the innocent little 10.2.0 label suggests.

Want another game where humanity is mainly there to provide screaming noises? Ghost Keeper puts you in charge of the haunting, commanding ghosts and monsters instead of fleeing from them like somebody who made sensible life choices.
FAQ
What is the Survivor Intent System in Dead by Daylight 10.2.0?
The Survivor Intent System lets Survivors send eight predefined messages during a Trial through a configurable radial menu. Messages appear beside the HUD, and players can customise, mute or disable the system.
Can bots use Survivor Intent messages?
Yes. Bots can interact with the Survivor Intent System, so communication does not completely disappear when a human player is replaced.
Does Dead by Daylight 10.2.0 add voice chat?
No. The new system uses predefined intent messages, not voice chat. It mainly gives solo Survivors a basic way to coordinate without relying on Discord or interpretive crouching.
When can Survivors surrender in Dead by Daylight?
Under the new 10.2.0 rules, Survivors can surrender in specific situations where the Trial is already effectively decided, including when all remaining Survivors are simultaneously downed.
Can you leave a match if everyone else is a bot?
Yes, under the appropriate conditions. A remaining human Survivor can Abandon when the other Survivors have been replaced by bots, while Killers also gain options for bot-only endgame situations.
What else changed in Dead by Daylight 10.2.0?
The update also includes a substantial perk balance pass and new NieR:Automata cosmetics, including outfits based on 2B, A2 and Emil.
