Dead by Daylight's Portal Surprise Challenge: You're the Killer, So Why Are You Begging Survivors for Help?

To complete “Surprise 1 Survivor at Portals” in Dead by Daylight's Haunted by Daylight 2026 event, play as Killer, collect enough Void Energy, and wait for a Survivor to channel energy at a portal. When the special teleport prompt appears, hold the indicated button to emerge directly from that Survivor's portal. You don't need to stand beside another portal yourself.

That's the mechanic Behaviour Interactive's community manager confirmed. Unfortunately, knowing how it works is only half the battle. The other half involves finding a Survivor willing to do the one bloody thing your challenge requires.

Still battling Halloween challenges? Find out why Dead by Daylight's “Hook 20 Survivors” objective has been refusing to count. Apparently, the Entity has hired an accountant who can't count bodies.

How to complete the Portal Surprise challenge

Here's what you need to do:

  1. Play as Killer during Haunted by Daylight.

  2. Collect enough Void Energy to activate the special teleport.

  3. Watch for a Survivor channeling energy at a portal. Someone simply running through one doesn't count as the required interaction.

  4. Look for the special teleport prompt. Players have also reported a purple Killer Instinct indicator when the opportunity appears.

  5. Hold the indicated control to teleport directly to the Survivor's portal and surprise them.

The important distinction is that this requires a special teleport interaction. Running around the map, entering ordinary portals and hoping to frighten somebody into cardiac arrest won't necessarily accomplish anything.

You need the prompt triggered by a Survivor channeling energy.

And while you're dealing with portals, see how Halloween Void Crystals are making Killer perks look spectacularly useless. Even Hex: Ruin is getting bullied by a glowing rock.

Why isn't the challenge working?

The biggest obstacle is that Survivors must create the opportunity for you.

Normally, playing Killer involves finding Survivors, chasing them and introducing them to a selection of extremely uncomfortable gardening equipment. Here, you're effectively waiting for one to operate a supernatural vending machine.

And Survivors aren't obliged to cooperate.

Players have reported struggling because Survivors rarely stop to channel energy at portals. Some have attempted to encourage friendly interactions, with mixed results. One player reportedly completed the challenge this way, while another watched Survivors misunderstand the invitation and simply travel through the portals instead.

Which leaves you standing there, a supposedly terrifying murderer, politely waiting for someone to use the equipment correctly. It's difficult to maintain an atmosphere of supernatural dread when your evening has become a customer-service shift.

If the prompt isn't appearing, check whether you've collected sufficient Void Energy and whether a Survivor is actually channeling rather than merely entering or exiting a portal.

And don't waste time standing beside an ordinary portal waiting for something magical to happen. Behaviour has confirmed that isn't necessary.

How close must you be to the Survivor?

The exact maximum teleport range hasn't been confirmed.

Behaviour's community manager described the requirement as a nearby Survivor channeling a portal. However, one player reported successfully activating the teleport from approximately halfway across Eyrie of Crows.

That suggests the ability has more reach than you might expect, but it doesn't establish unlimited range or guarantee that every portal can be targeted from anywhere.

Watch for the prompt rather than guessing the distance.

Haunted by Daylight 2026 runs until November 3, so there's a limited window to finish the challenge. With sufficient Void Energy, all that's left is finding a Survivor who unwittingly volunteers to become your personal delivery service.

About the Editor

I'm Niels Gys, founder and editor of CRIMENET GAZETTE. I write about crime, heist, villain, and horror games because somebody has to separate genuine criminal masterpieces from games that couldn't organize a successful mugging.

Outside the website, I'm the frontman of JETBLACK SMILE, a Belgian rock 'n' roll band that sounds like bad decisions played through loud guitars. Turns out writing about chaos, criminals, and morally questionable life choices isn't all that different from writing songs.

I started CRIMENET because too much gaming coverage feels afraid to have an opinion. Reviews become press releases, every game is "solid," and somehow everyone leaves happy except the reader.

Not here.

CRIMENET covers crime, heist, villain and horror games, with GTA Online as one of our main ongoing beats. Not the heroic kind. The kind where you rob banks, build empires, betray your crew, or become the monster everyone else is trying to survive.

I don't do review scores. The internet already has enough people arguing whether a game deserves a 72 instead of a 71, like they're negotiating a hostage release over a single percentage point. I'd rather tell you what the game actually feels like to play and whether it's worth your time.

Every article is built on research, evidence, and an unhealthy intolerance for mediocre game design.

Strong opinions are welcome. Invented facts are not.
