The Outlast Trials Makes You Collect Paperwork Before You're Allowed to Escape

The Outlast Trials has launched its October 20 Geister update, but anyone expecting to jump straight into Escape the Facility has another job to do first. Red Barrels has turned the escape attempt into a community-wide effort: players must collect Escape Intel Schematics, survive their Trials and leave with the schematics still in their inventory to advance the event.

According to developer-newsletter information shared by players, the community must reach Phase 3 before Escape becomes available. The official update confirms the milestone system, although it doesn't explicitly identify Phase 3 as the unlock point.

Apparently, escaping Murkoff now requires the cooperation of the very people Murkoff has spent years turning into traumatised lunatics. An interesting management decision.

GEISTER text beside an eerie feathered skull with red eyes and paint drips on a dark background.

Getting out with your schematics is difficult enough without the Night Hunter chasing you into supposedly safe areas. Find out why light doesn't always stop him, before your escape plan ends with an enthusiastic machete demonstration.

How do you contribute to Escape the Facility?

According to the official Season 7.2 update notes, players need to find Escape Intel Schematics during Trials and successfully extract with them. These contribute towards community milestones, advancing the event through different phases and offering exclusive rewards to participating players.

The important detail is that finding a schematic isn't enough. You actually need to get out with it.

Which introduces a rather unpleasant complication. You're already trying to survive an institution populated by people whose hobbies include mutilation, psychological torture and medical procedures that would make Josef Mengele question the ethics committee. Now you're expected to protect a collection of paperwork while doing it.

Imagine breaking out of prison, only for someone to stop you at the gates because you forgot to bring the correct documents. Congratulations, you've survived the murder basement. Unfortunately, Form 27B is missing, so back inside you go.

Still, there's something rather interesting about turning individual survival into a collective escape effort. Getting yourself out alive is one thing. Getting out with something that helps everyone else is another.

Before Murkoff started making prisoners collect paperwork for their freedom, it tried poisoning the building. Discover whether Chemical Leak actually made The Outlast Trials scarier, or merely turned psychological torture into emergency plumbing.

When does Escape the Facility actually unlock?

That's the frustrating part: there is no confirmed unlock date yet.

Players discussing the developer newsletter on Reddit report that Escape becomes available once the community reaches Phase 3.

The official October 20 announcement confirms milestone-based progression but doesn't specify the Phase 3 unlock condition or how many schematics the community needs.

Several practical questions also remain unanswered, including where schematics appear, whether they occupy ordinary inventory slots and which Trials qualify. Suggestions about dropping schematics near the shuttle shouldn't be mistaken for verified strategies either.

There is some precedent. The original Escape event in April 2025 also involved gathering information for Amelia before she could help players escape through the Trial Terminal.

For now, the job is straightforward: find schematics, survive and bring them home.

Murkoff has finally given its prisoners something resembling collective bargaining power. Unfortunately, the bargaining involves being chased through a slaughterhouse while carrying stationery.

I'm Niels Gys, founder and editor of CRIMENET GAZETTE. I write about crime, heist, villain, and horror games because somebody has to separate genuine criminal masterpieces from games that couldn't organize a successful mugging.

Outside the website, I'm the frontman of JETBLACK SMILE, a Belgian rock 'n' roll band that sounds like bad decisions played through loud guitars. Turns out writing about chaos, criminals, and morally questionable life choices isn't all that different from writing songs.

I started CRIMENET because too much gaming coverage feels afraid to have an opinion. Reviews become press releases, every game is "solid," and somehow everyone leaves happy except the reader.

Not here.

CRIMENET covers crime, heist, villain and horror games, with GTA Online as one of our main ongoing beats. Not the heroic kind. The kind where you rob banks, build empires, betray your crew, or become the monster everyone else is trying to survive.

I don't do review scores. The internet already has enough people arguing whether a game deserves a 72 instead of a 71, like they're negotiating a hostage release over a single percentage point. I'd rather tell you what the game actually feels like to play and whether it's worth your time.

Every article is built on research, evidence, and an unhealthy intolerance for mediocre game design.

Strong opinions are welcome. Invented facts are not.

Think less "trusted reviewer."

More "your inside man in the digital underworld."

I'm here to tell you which crimes are worth committing. 🤘
