Frostrail's Demo Draws 110,000 Players Who Apparently Want to Freeze to Death on a Train

Frostrail's free Steam demo is available until October 26, 2026, giving players a chance to experience its frozen survival-horror wasteland before the planned Q4 Early Access release. And judging by the numbers, an enormous number of people have decided that ordinary train journeys simply aren't miserable enough.

According to developer FakeFish, Frostrail has reached 570,000 Steam wishlists, attracted 110,000 unique demo players and peaked at approximately 9,000 concurrent players. The studio also reports more than 45,000 new wishlists during Steam Next Fest, where it says the demo reached the top five. Those are developer-reported figures, but they're still impressive for a game whose central premise involves travelling through a frozen wasteland in what could become the world's most elaborate refrigerated coffin.

Still in the mood for survival horror involving questionable machinery and colleagues with a limited life expectancy? Meet BORE, where four players operate a gigantic drill and sell dead monsters for profit. Its free demo is also available during Steam Next Fest. Apparently, workplace safety died before humanity did.

Your Train Is Your Home, Workshop and Potentially Your Funeral

Frostrail takes place in a world devastated by a supernatural catastrophe involving an emperor's pact with the Void. The landscape is frozen, hostile revenants are wandering about, and humanity has apparently concluded that the sensible response is to put its remaining hopes into railway maintenance.

Players travel aboard a train that serves as transportation, shelter and a mobile base. Survival involves scavenging abandoned settlements, crafting equipment, managing resources and upgrading the train while dealing with creatures that have absolutely no intention of checking whether you've purchased a valid ticket. The demo supports solo play and cooperation with up to four players.

The interesting part is how everything depends on that train. It's the thing keeping you moving through the wasteland, but maintaining it requires resources scattered across places you'd probably prefer to avoid. Stay aboard and eventually you'll need supplies. Go looking for supplies and you risk becoming another unpleasant discovery for the next group of idiots brave enough to investigate. Imagine buying a house, discovering that it runs on coal, then being informed that the nearest fuel supplier is a monster-infested village and customer service has been dead for several decades.

If Frostrail hasn't completely destroyed your confidence in public transport, Dreadline Express offers another horrifying train journey. This time, survival depends on uncovering passengers' secrets and deciding what to do with them. First-class tickets apparently include psychological damage.

The Demo Has Already Been Through Some Repairs

FakeFish says it has made changes following September's closed playtest, including adjustments to combat feedback, stamina, visibility and interactions involved in boarding the train. Whether those improvements make the experience genuinely satisfying remains a question for hands-on testing. Strong wishlist numbers demonstrate interest in the premise. They don't establish whether combat works well, the survival mechanics remain engaging or the train eventually becomes an expensive chore on wheels.

Anyone curious can play Frostrail's free demo on Steam before October 26. Early Access is currently planned for Q4 2026, with no exact launch date confirmed.

About the Editor

I'm Niels Gys, founder and editor of CRIMENET GAZETTE. I write about crime, heist, villain, and horror games because somebody has to separate genuine criminal masterpieces from games that couldn't organize a successful mugging.

Outside the website, I'm the frontman of JETBLACK SMILE, a Belgian rock 'n' roll band that sounds like bad decisions played through loud guitars. Turns out writing about chaos, criminals, and morally questionable life choices isn't all that different from writing songs.

I started CRIMENET because too much gaming coverage feels afraid to have an opinion. Reviews become press releases, every game is "solid," and somehow everyone leaves happy except the reader.

Not here.

CRIMENET covers crime, heist, villain and horror games, with GTA Online as one of our main ongoing beats. Not the heroic kind. The kind where you rob banks, build empires, betray your crew, or become the monster everyone else is trying to survive.

I don't do review scores. The internet already has enough people arguing whether a game deserves a 72 instead of a 71, like they're negotiating a hostage release over a single percentage point. I'd rather tell you what the game actually feels like to play and whether it's worth your time.

Every article is built on research, evidence, and an unhealthy intolerance for mediocre game design.

Strong opinions are welcome. Invented facts are not.
