PAYDAY 3 Hidden Blade Bug Eats Your Knife and Leaves the Cop Alive

If Hidden Blade is eating your Throwing Knife but the enemy is still standing there looking annoyingly alive, check whether you're using the Haymaker weapon perk.

Starbreeze has officially listed Haymaker + Hidden Blade as a broken interaction.

So no, you haven't misunderstood Hidden Blade. There isn't some hidden armour calculation you've failed to account for, and you don't need to spend the next 45 minutes dismantling your build while staring at the skill tree like it has personally betrayed you. The combination is broken.

Hidden Blade just ate your knife. Fine. Now make sure the rest of your loadout isn’t quietly plotting against you too. See which PAYDAY 3 Weapon Perks are actually worth equipping.

Haymaker and Hidden Blade don't play nicely together

Hidden Blade is supposed to be wonderfully simple.

If you have a Throwing Knife, a quick melee attack consumes it and instantly kills the target, except Dozers. You have knife. Enemy exists. Enemy stops existing. PAYDAY has always been at its best when its mathematics are this refreshingly criminal.

Then Haymaker gets involved.

Starbreeze specifically lists a conflict between Haymaker and Hidden Blade in the known issues for Update 3.9. When the two interact, the Throwing Knife can still be consumed, but Hidden Blade doesn't actually kill the enemy. Which is spectacularly unhelpful.

The game has successfully completed the part where it takes something away from you. That bit works perfectly. Unfortunately, the bit where the cop dies appears to have missed the meeting.

Imagine ordering a hitman who arrives, takes the gun you've supplied him, throws it into a canal and invoices you. That's roughly where we are.

Yes, the Throwing Knife is actually consumed

And this is why the bug matters.

Hidden Blade normally spends the Throwing Knife as part of the instant kill. With the broken Haymaker interaction, you can still lose that knife even though the thing you paid for with it, namely making one heavily armed problem disappear, doesn't happen.

So this isn't just an animation looking strange or an enemy taking an extra half-second to fall over.

You are losing a resource. That's what makes it so easy to mistake this for some obscure mechanic. If the knife simply failed to trigger, you'd probably assume the skill didn't activate. But here the game takes the knife anyway, which strongly suggests something happened.

Something did happen.

PAYDAY robbed you.

Which, admittedly, is very committed to the theme.

Is this supposed to happen?

No.

Starbreeze identifies the combination as a known issue. That matters because otherwise there are several perfectly reasonable things you might start blaming.

Maybe the enemy had armour. Maybe Hidden Blade has another condition buried somewhere. Maybe your timing was wrong. Maybe Haymaker changes melee behaviour in a way you've missed. Maybe the moon is in retrograde and Dallas has upset an ancient knife god.

No.

Haymaker and Hidden Blade are conflicting.

You can stop interrogating the skill tree.

Perhaps one broken knife isn’t enough crime for the evening. See which games are currently doing heists best, from carefully planned robberies to four people discovering simultaneously that nobody brought the drill.

What should you do for now?

If Hidden Blade is important to your build, don't combine it with Haymaker for the moment.

There isn't a clever workaround buried underneath this. You're dealing with two systems that currently disagree about what should happen after you press the button.

Remove Haymaker, use another weapon perk, or avoid relying on Hidden Blade until Starbreeze confirms the conflict has been fixed.

Has Haymaker + Hidden Blade been fixed yet?

Starbreeze confirmed the bug in Update 3.9.

Neither Hotfix 3.9.1 nor Hotfix 3.9.2 documents a fix for this specific interaction.

That doesn't let us say with absolute certainty that the bug still occurs in every situation after 3.9.2. Silent fixes happen, undocumented changes happen, software occasionally behaves like something assembled during a pub lock-in.

What we can say is that Starbreeze has not officially documented a fix yet. Until it does, I wouldn't build around Haymaker + Hidden Blade and hope for the best.

I'm Niels Gys, founder and editor of CRIMENET GAZETTE. I write about crime, heist, villain, and horror games because somebody has to separate genuine criminal masterpieces from games that couldn't organize a successful mugging.

Outside the website, I'm the frontman of JETBLACK SMILE, a Belgian rock 'n' roll band that sounds like bad decisions played through loud guitars. Turns out writing about chaos, criminals, and morally questionable life choices isn't all that different from writing songs.

I started CRIMENET because too much gaming coverage feels afraid to have an opinion. Reviews become press releases, every game is "solid," and somehow everyone leaves happy except the reader.

Not here.

CRIMENET covers crime, heist, villain and horror games, with GTA Online as one of our main ongoing beats. Not the heroic kind. The kind where you rob banks, build empires, betray your crew, or become the monster everyone else is trying to survive.

I don't do review scores. The internet already has enough people arguing whether a game deserves a 72 instead of a 71, like they're negotiating a hostage release over a single percentage point. I'd rather tell you what the game actually feels like to play and whether it's worth your time.

Every article is built on research, evidence, and an unhealthy intolerance for mediocre game design.
