Sleeping Dogs Triad XP Guide: Level 9, a Mountain of Bodies, and Still Not Good Enough

Finished Sleeping Dogs but stuck at Triad Level 9? You probably haven't encountered a bug. The game only awards additional Triad XP when you replay a mission and beat your previous best result. Simply completing it again won't get you anywhere. To reach Level 10, replay missions where your score can improve, equip Triad XP-boosting clothing, and make better use of the combat system. You don't need to restart the story. You just need to convince Sleeping Dogs that your previous displays of organised violence weren't quite impressive enough.

Wei Shen has spent the entire game proving he belongs in the Triads, but does Sleeping Dogs still deserve your time in 2026? Our Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition review examines the combat, criminal underworld and why this forgotten GTA rival still punches above its weight.
Why Your Triad XP Isn't Increasing
Sleeping Dogs has three separate progression systems: Cop, Face and Triad. You can max out the first two, finish the campaign, and still find yourself staring at your final Triad upgrade as though Wei Shen hasn't already demonstrated considerable dedication to the criminal lifestyle.
Every completed story mission records your Triad performance. When you replay it, the game compares your new result with your previous best. Only an improvement awards additional experience. Suppose your previous best result earned 1,000 Triad XP. You replay the mission and achieve a result worth 1,100. Only the additional 100 XP counts towards your progression. Score 900 instead, and you've earned nothing new. These numbers are illustrative, but the mechanic is documented in the Definitive Edition manual.
This explains why players can spend an entire evening replaying missions, rearranging the facial features of half of Hong Kong, and finish with approximately the same progress they started with. The game doesn't care how many people you've beaten up. It wants to know whether you've beaten them up better than last time.
How to Reach Triad Level 10 After Finishing the Story
Forget blindly replaying the campaign. You need missions where there's still room to improve your previous performance.
Open Social Hub. Pause the game, select Social Hub and navigate to Missions.
Check your previous scores. Look at the red Triad triangle indicators beside completed missions.
Prioritise weaker results. Missions with fewer filled triangles may offer more room for improvement.
Equip Triad XP clothing. Wear your strongest complete bonus set before replaying.
Improve your combat performance. Mix attacks, counters, environmental finishers and headshots where possible.
Check your result afterward. If the improvement barely moves your XP bar, choose another mission with greater potential.
Don't automatically choose the longest mission or the one with the most enemies. A shorter mission with a poor previous score may be more useful than an extended fight you've already mastered. Three filled red triangles indicate a strong performance, although they don't reveal every remaining XP opportunity. You're trying to improve records, not clock up additional shifts.
How to Earn More Triad XP During Missions
Sleeping Dogs rewards aggressive, effective and varied combat. Simply eliminating enemies as quickly as possible isn't necessarily the best approach when chasing Triad experience. Which is quite an achievement for a game where you can introduce someone's skull to an electrical appliance and receive a congratulatory score.
Mix light and heavy attacks, counter incoming strikes, and incorporate special moves unlocked through martial arts training. Leg breaks, follow-up attacks and disarms are useful techniques identified in achievement guides. You want to accumulate valuable combat actions before finishing the fight, rather than immediately knocking out every opponent. Naturally, this creates the ridiculous situation where becoming a more accomplished criminal sometimes involves keeping your enemies conscious long enough to demonstrate several additional methods of hurting them.
Environmental takedowns are particularly useful. Grab enemies and use nearby objects whenever the mission provides an opportunity, but remember that immediately finishing every opponent may sacrifice chances to score through other attacks first. There's a delicate balance between efficiently disposing of a criminal and extracting the maximum educational value from his remaining teeth.
During shooting sequences, favour headshots and accurate attacks. Vaulting over cover can activate slow-motion aiming, making precision easier. Some missions also provide vehicle combat or explosive opportunities that can contribute to stronger scores. Not every mission offers the same possibilities, so adapt your approach rather than forcing one technique into every encounter. The Definitive Edition trophy guide documents additional scoring techniques.

Which Clothing Gives Bonus Triad XP?
Three standard clothing sets provide Triad experience bonuses:
Clothing set | Triad XP bonus |
Blue Lantern Triad | +5% |
Red Pole Triad | +10% |
Mountain Master Triad | +15% |
You must wear a complete matching set, including the appropriate top, trousers and shoes, to receive its bonus. Mountain Master provides the largest of these three bonuses and is the obvious choice if available.
However, bonus clothing doesn't override the replay restriction. You still need to improve your previous result to earn additional XP. Putting on expensive trousers and repeating exactly the same performance isn't a progression strategy. It's just an unnecessarily elaborate dress code for violence.
Can DLC Help You Reach Triad Level 10?
Potentially. Players have reported gaining additional Triad experience through the Zodiac Tournament, making it worth checking before committing to more story replays. Community discussions recommend combining tournament content with better mission scores and XP-boosting clothing, although the tournament isn't a guaranteed shortcut. How much experience you still need, and what you've already completed, determines how useful it may be.
Your version matters too. Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition includes the Zodiac Tournament and Triad Enforcer Pack, whereas owners of the original 2012 release cannot assume they have access to that content. Nor should you assume every DLC activity awards Triad XP or follows the main campaign's replay rules.
Still Stuck at Level 9 or 9.5?
First, check whether your replays actually improve previous scores. If you repeatedly choose missions where you've already performed exceptionally well, you may have very little experience left to earn. Try another mission, equip your strongest XP outfit, and concentrate on combat techniques you neglected during your original playthrough.
If your new score genuinely exceeds your previous best but your XP still refuses to increase, the normal replay restriction may not explain your situation. Players have reported possible progression issues, but those accounts don't establish a universal bug or reliable fix.
If you've reached Level 10 but still haven't received the Ultimate Fighter achievement or trophy, check your upgrades. You must unlock all ten Triad upgrades, not merely reach the required experience level.
There's no guaranteed number of missions you must replay. Someone just short of Level 10 might need only a modest improvement, while someone with a larger XP deficit and several excellent mission scores may face considerably more work. At least you don't need another complete playthrough. Find the missions where you can improve, make those improvements count, and unlock that final upgrade.
After everything Wei Shen has done for the Sun On Yee, the least they could do is acknowledge his professional development.

Sleeping Dogs Triad XP FAQ
Why am I stuck at Triad Level 9 in Sleeping Dogs?
Mission replays only award additional Triad XP when you beat your previous best score. Repeating missions without improving your results won't increase your progression. Focus on missions with lower Triad scores.
Can you reach Triad Level 10 after finishing the story?
Yes. You can replay completed story missions through Social Hub and earn additional Triad XP by improving your previous results. You don't need to restart the campaign.
What is the fastest way to earn Triad XP?
Equip a complete Mountain Master Triad outfit for its 15% XP bonus, then replay missions where your previous score has room for improvement. Use varied combat techniques, environmental takedowns and headshots to maximise your results.
Does the Zodiac Tournament give Triad XP?
Players report earning Triad XP through Zodiac Tournament content, which is included in Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition. However, completing it doesn't guarantee you'll reach Level 10.
Why didn't I unlock the Ultimate Fighter achievement?
Ultimate Fighter requires all ten Triad upgrades to be unlocked. If you've reached Triad Level 10 but haven't received the achievement or trophy, check whether you've purchased your final upgrade.
